Sustainable Fisheries

An empty oil transport tanker on our way to the Black Sea. As the strait that connects the Black Sea to the Mediterreanean Sea, the Bosphorous is the equivalent of the "Panama Canal" to the naitons in the Black Sea region (Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Romania, and Bulgaria). Many oil tankers travel through the Bosphorous and oil spills(recently by the Russians) have dire consequences for all nations.

The fishermen's home base

The fishermen. One is really hott (can you spot which one?), and the lady from the Italian Ministry of the Environment was going crazy over him! When we left the spot, she was still talking about him! I kiddingly suggested that on our way back we should stop by and pick up a certain fishermen, and she turned to Sibel and said "can we do that? does anyone else want to?" haha!

Asli and Sibel's son throwing pebbles

Meet Asli! I love this picture of her :)

The small scale sustainable fishing system that they are trying to promote. It's the traditional form of using fishing nets in this region and from my observation it is very time and labor intensive. There is one job where a watchman sits on the top of one of the polls and signals to others when the nets are too full. Without a boat, he is usually left stranded in the water. I wondered how he uses the bathroom, but I didn't ask.

Going in!

They pull along the nets to collect the fish
